Site backup

A backup is a finished copy of your site that you keep on your own computer. It holds your pages, images and content. It is a way to know your site is yours, and a way to move if you ever need to.

  • You are already protected. Every change you publish is saved in a private place we look after for you. A backup is for you to hold, not because anything is at risk.
  • What you get. A finished copy of your pages, images and content, with no editor. Forms, bookings and payments will not work in it.
  • What it costs. One free backup a year, plus one free backup if you leave. Extra backups are $20 each.
  • How long we keep it. Each backup is deleted after 90 days, so download it.
  1. Click Site backup in your dashboard menu.

  2. Read the Available now card. It tells you whether your next backup is free or costs $20.

  3. Read What will not work off our platform. It lists the parts of your site that depend on us, if any. If nothing does, it says nothing on your site depends on SayVel and every page will work the same on any static host.

  4. Click the button. It reads Make my free backup when it is free, or Make my backup with Pay $20 when it is not.

  5. If it is the paid kind, a payment page opens first. Pay there, and you come back to the page with a thank-you note.

  6. Wait while we package your site. It takes a few minutes, and you can leave the page. Your backup will be waiting under Your backups when you come back.

  7. When it is ready, click Download.

If you made one before, a tick box reads Newest backup replaces the last one. When it is ticked, your older backup is deleted once the new one is ready. Untick it to keep both.

You can delete a backup once you have downloaded it. After the download, a Delete link appears on its row.

  1. Click Delete on the backup.

  2. Read the question: Are you sure you want to delete this backup? It reminds you this cannot be undone, so make sure you have a copy on your computer.

  3. Click Delete backup to go ahead, or Keep it to stop.

If you do nothing, each backup deletes itself 90 days after you made it. Its row says the day.

The free yearly backup is once in 365 days. If you have used it, the page offers a paid backup for $20 instead.

If you already paid for a backup today and ask for another, a question box checks first. It reads Pay $20 for another backup or Not now. You can make up to 3 backups a day. After that, the page says to try again tomorrow.

The page lists only what applies to your site. Here is what it can include:

  • Forms. Your forms send answers to our servers. Elsewhere, they will not send, and nothing reaches your inbox. You would need a form service from your new host.
  • Online booking. Booking runs on our servers. Elsewhere, the booking form will not work.
  • Payments and your online store. The cart, checkout and orders run through us. Elsewhere, the Buy buttons will not work.
  • Widgets that need us. Some parts of your pages load from our servers and would show blank.
  • Redirects. Your site forwards old page addresses to new ones. Some hosts ignore this, and those old addresses would show a page not found message.
  • Security and caching settings. Your site still works on other hosts, but you would enter these settings again in that host’s own control panel.
  • Links to SayVel. Some links point to SayVel addresses and keep working only while SayVel runs them.
